Useful Tips

We recommend that you look at the information in the ‘Locations’ section of this site before you apply. Here there is a lot of useful information on the different Departments and Agencies, the functions and jobs that will be available in the different areas. There is really useful information on the locations themselves, covering pen pictures of the towns / cities, information on the transport links, education facilities, property prices etc

Please remember, it is important that you use the CAF even if your name is already on an existing transfer list or if you have already written to your own or another department/ organisation looking for a transfer to a decentralised location.

Make an application - keep your options open.

The priority closing date for applications to the Central Applications Facility (CAF) was the 7th of September 2004. After this date, applications are still being accepted. Preference will be given to those who apply after the 7th of September in the order of the date of application. Should a number of applications be made on the same day, the ranking will be on the basis of seniority.

Please be aware that you will need your PPS number to apply.

We would recommend that if you do not have your PPS No. to hand, you should locate it before commencing your actual application. Your PPS No. appears on many of your personnel and tax related documents eg at the top of your most recent P60.

Online is Easier

You can commence, update and complete your application anytime.

Other Options

  • If it is more convenient for you, you may prefer to drop into the Careers Store of the Civil Service Commission at Chapter House, 26 - 30 Abbey Street Upper, Dublin 1 to go ‘on-line’ and make our application. Our Careers Store personnel will be more than happy to assist you.
  • You may wish to make your application by phone by calling the CAF Application Hotline to make your application on 1890 252031. The Hotline will be open, Monday to Friday, from 9.15 - 5.15.
  • The actual Application is quite short - if you have thought about where you want to go in advance, the application itself should only take about 10 – 15 mins to complete.
  • You can begin to fill in your application form and leave it to be completed on another occasion by clicking the ‘SAVE’ button on the form.
  • Although you will be presented with 10 preference boxes, you do not have to make 10 choices. You can choose to indicate anything from just 1 preference right up to 10 preferences.
  • Once you have chosen your preferences, you will have the facility to print the screen with the choices/locations you have picked. You will also be able to go back to http://www.publicjobscaf.ie/ at anytime, and using your passwords, check the preferences you have chosen.
  • Having completed the Application, if you feel there is something that you would like us / we need to know which is relevant to a move, please briefly outline it in the ‘General Comments’ box at the very end of the Application.
  • The form will not be sent to us until you continue through the form and click the ‘Save’ button.
  • Once you submit the form we will acknowledge its receipt immediately. If you have given an e-mail address we will then communicate with you by e-mail so make sure you check your e-mail regularly.

Your Concerns Answered

  • We take SECURITY extremely seriously and have the technology to ensure that only you have access to your personal details.
  • To protect your application we will be asking you to create 2 ‘passwords’.
  • The first one you will be asked to create quite early in the application. Here you will be asked to create your own username and a password – very like what you would do for your own work computer or on an on-line banking system. This information will be automatically e-mailed to you. We recommend that you keep a copy of this in a safe place.
  • You will be asked to create a second ‘password’ just before you indicate your preferences. You will need to remember and take note of this password. We will not send you an e-mail with this password. Again, we recommend that you keep a copy of this in a safe place.
  • You will need both 'passwords' if you want to go in and change your application or preferences.
  • If you have any problems with getting access to a PC or have special needs then call our CAF Application Hotline on 1890 252031 to see how we can help.
  • If you do not have an e-mail address, and you can’t get one, we will automatically put a ‘helpdesk email’ into your application. This will alert our personnel on the CAF Application Hotline and they will contact you after you have completed your application and talk to you about how you would like information sent to you.
  • You should check that your computer meets the requirements of our website before attempting to complete an on-line application. Click on site requirements to find out the requirements.
  • When completing your application form, remember to regularly click the ‘SAVE’ button located at the end of each page.
  • If your computer crashes while completing your application, information will be retained only up to the last time you clicked the ‘SAVE’ button, so it is a good idea to get into the habit of regularly doing this.
  • If you encounter any problems at all while completing an on-line application form please contact our CAF Application Hotline on 1890 252031.
